The Federal Environment Ministry of Germany supports the Global Lighting Challenge with several activities on national level. In 2008, Germany started a lead-market initiative for LED to promote this new, energy-efficient and climate friendly technology. Furthermore, as part of the National Climate Initiative, the use of led-technology in municipalities is promoted by the Federal Environment Ministry with a special grant programme. Since 2008, about 2.800 municipalities have taken part in LED-projects supported by the Federal Environment Ministry.
